‘Paradys' is the appropriate title of the exhibition that writer and art critic Hans den Hartog has put together in and around the former estates and princely gardens of Oranjewoud, an oasis of peace in the municipality of Heerenveen. You can visit this special, but historically charged environment - in which Museum Belvédère is also located - and the exhibition 'Paradys' from 7 May.
Den Hartog Jager invited 15 international top artists to create new work, inspired by the surroundings and the rich history of Oranjewoud. Anything is possible: from critical commentary on the outside world and the power that this place has created to attempts to make a place like Oranjewoud even more beautiful, even more heavenly.
Participating artists: Marianna Simnett, Charles Avery (GRIMM), Mercedes Azpilicueta, Diana Scherer (Roof-A Gallery), Erik van Lieshout (Annet Gelink Gallery), Augustas Serapinas, Isa van Lier, Louis Le Roy, Kasper Bosmans, CATPC / Athanas Kindendie, Jakob Kudsk Steensen, Alexandra Pirici, Em’kal Eyongakpa, Gregor Schneider en Alicja Kwade.
On Wednesday 22 June at 19:30, Slieker Film organises a special evening with artist and filmmaker Erik van Lieshout. Hans den Hartog Jager will talk to him and the audience about van Lieshout's unorthodox working methods and the film he made about the colourful sea of flowers he made especially for 'Paradys'. Such a mosaic is 'paradise', 'beauty' in the extreme, but Erik van Lieshout wouldn’t be Erik van Lieshout if he did not give it a twist: after all, isn't such a mosaic also 'tourism at its most ludicrous'? Van Lieshout spent several months in Oranjewoud to develop the work on the spot - this evening you'll discover what adventures it led to. Tickets can be ordered here
