Art Rotterdam 2022
Booth 43 - Main Section & Projections
Mia Chaplin | Sisse Holst Pedersen | Buhlebezwe Siwani | Marilyn Sonneveld
On the Main Section we will show a new series of paintings and glass objects by Marilyn Sonneveld. The body is central in Sonneveld's oil paintings. Through a vivid play of color and form the artist conveys personal and intimate narratives that communicate more universal notions around the body, such as (self) love, (self) acceptance, vulnerability, sexuality and insecurity.
Sisse Holst Pedersen will present three new large scale ceramic sculptures, that suggest bodily movements and bodily associations of shape and form, exploring its fragility and its capacity.
Mia Chaplin will present a series of works that oscillates between the abstract and figurative in which Chaplin explores the crooked and imperfect nature of intimate relationships. In rich impasto oil paintings and sculptures, with the immediacy of prominent brush strokes and expressive color palettes, she searches for the vivid tension between the soft and the violent, the familiar and the estranged.
On the Projections section we show a video by Buhlebezwe Siwani. Eziko (2018) is part of a body of video work that focuses on how Christianity manifested itself in different parts of South Africa. Eziko (2018) is set in Gauteng, Johannesburg, where a black labour force conglomerated. Black people from different ethnic groups created what is now referred to as a melting pot. In order to assimilate, this labour force left behind cultural beliefs, family, rituals and the notion of home.
