In his practice, Ammerlaan strives to capture the constant flux of our material reality while
exploring the properties of abstraction.
The patchwork paintings consist of pieces of cotton and linen that have undergone various natural processes. Fabric gradients are achieved through a decolourization technique that emulates the natural oxidation process caused by sunlight on materials. In addition, terrestrial and extraterrestrial matter cover some of the fabrics. When exposed to the elements, the textiles absorb rain, dust particles and soil—visible traces documenting the passage of time on the material. Such uncontrollable processes stand in stark contrast to the meticulously crafted patterns, sewn together with extreme precision.
