Wim Delvoye has studied sculpture from the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century. In that period, the era of baroque and rococo, it was fashionable to make dashing sculptures of people in highly twisted poses. Many sculptors who became very famous for this have now fallen into oblivion.
For his 'Twisted Sculptures', Delvoye applies advanced scanning and image processing techniques to ancient sculptures.
These works are part of the series in which Wim Delvoye makes radically modified copies of 19th-century sculptures. These artworks are 'twisted' versions that reinforce the circular movement already present in the model, intensify it. The works 'Daphnis and Chloe' have been cast using ancient techniques, but their form has been created by using digital technology where the original modelis scanned from all angles in high resolution. The image file is then modified and printed in 3D, upon which this then provides the basis for the execution of the final cast bronze piece.
