Nokukhanya Langa (1991): ‘I work with abstraction because it is about the loss of the image, about losing the world and trying to construct it in another way. For me, it functions as a negation of representation that constantly leads to an unknown from which it, in a way, takes form again. I counterpose these abstractions with more pointed gestures - whether critical, humorous, or questioning - by working in an open manner. As such, they become carriers through which private histories, political and cultural undertones, allegories, subversive narratives, and humour reveal themselves.’
Nokukhanya Langa paints Soft Political Abstract Art: an art form that she invented herself, but which she hasn’t (yet) clearly defined. Her work can therefore be seen as a first step in that direction, whereby it can be established that she tries to reconcile the loss of the image with the reality around her. Her abstract paintings often feature a hidden smile (i.e. an abstracted smiley) or contain texts about people around her. One time a member of an academy jury gave a comment, another time a gallery owner thought he could give Langa advice.
In a somewhat surreal portrait “Portrait of Mrs Barbara Bush” she painted the former American First Lady. She covered her face with a black gaze and gave her white gloves.

Untitled
The works of Nokukhanya Langa, who was born in South Africa and grew up in the US, are actually vehicles to express personal, cultural and political behaviours, stories, problems, etc. This can be done as a painter via a text on a canvas or as a hairdresser - such as at the Galerie van Gelder booth at Art Rotterdam 2019 - on the basis of contact with the customer. All her - humorous - works are subversive or political expressions with a very critical undertone. Her gallerist Kees van Gelder introduces her art as the founder of the "Soft Political Abstract Art movement" that manages to put profound feelings such as pain and injustice on the map with minimal means. An exciting artist.
