Sjoerd Knibbeler is a visual artist from the Netherlands, living and working in Amsterdam. He explores the scientific quest to discover the world through an associative, process-driven approach to photography, deploying strategies like observation, experimentation and model making. The camera – in one form or another – is always present as a tool in his process, which materializes in printed matter, objects, video installations and artist books.
His work was awarded the Grand Prix du Jury Photographie in Hyères (F) in 2015, the same year he was selected as Foam Talent. Since then he had solo exhibitions at Foam Photography Museum (NL), Espace Images (CH), Villa Noailles (F) and Het Scheepvaartmuseum (NL). With ‘In Elements’, he presented his first extensive museum solo exhibition in Museum Kunst der Westküste (D), accompanied by a monograph published by Hatje Cantz Verlag. Notable group exhibitions include ‘Quickscan NL#02’ at the Nederlands Fotomuseum (NL), ‘Maan/Moon’ at FOMU Antwerpen (BE) and ‘Wenn Der Wind Weht’ at Kunst Haus Wien (AT). He was the 2019 winner of the Lucy Art Residency Award (GR) and the 2020 winner of the Majaoja Prize (FI) at Backlight Festival.
His work is part of national and international collections like Maison Européenne Photographie, Kunst Haus Wien, Foam Photography Museum, Nederlands Fotomuseum and Museum Voorlinden.
Sjoerd Knibbeler teaches at the Utrecht school of arts and is a member of the international photography collective piece of cake. He is represented by ROOF-A Gallery in Rotterdam.
