Greg Colson is an American artist whose art is marked by the jarringly direct way he commingles material and conceptual elements. In his constructions, precisely rendered systems are disrupted and contradicted by the contexts they are placed in. By drawing out the poetry and humor in our social patterns, Colson seems to suggest there are limits to – and hazards inherent in – our obsession with efficiency, data, and analysis of every kind.
Greg Colson’s art combines conflicting notions of order and neglect, image and support, the big picture and small details. Among his body of work is a series of “stick map” sculptures of cities such as Cleveland, San Jose, Miami, or Amsterdam. These sculptures are built of found lengths of various materials; ski poles, curtain rods, plastic pipe, wood molding – the structure becoming a metaphor for the manifold influences that form a city. In another series of constructed “pie chart” paintings (based on socio-cultural surveys), Colson mocks the deluge of analysis that is so much a part of our daily existence by playing up the material and iconographic elements to such a degree that any actual understanding is subverted. Seeing Ourselves in Greg Colson’s Quirky Pie Chart Paintings
The artist’s droll paintings present the pie chart as a useful monitor of a group’s behavior, while also revealing it to be exclusionary and superficial.
Greg Colson belongs to that unenviable group of artists who are considered unclassifiable, and because of that are often overlooked. This status is deeply ironic because of his long interest in systems and categories. He understands that for all of its claims of democracy, the United States (like most of the world) finds ways to maintain certain hierarchies. A painter and sculptor who makes what Donald Judd called “specific objects” out of found materials, he has long been preoccupied with the ways society visually defines and organizes reality. He has made street maps out of strips of discarded wood and used a green tennis ball to represent a planet in our solar system. He has drawn and painted pie charts that measure and name the shared components of our latest collective anxiety.

ART IN REVIEW: Greg Colson
With deadpan wit, Greg Colson, a Los Angeles sculptor, addresses our modern need to bring order to chaos. Each of his round, retro-style ''Pie Chart'' paintings is just that: a pie chart of neatly lettered and illustrated sections representing the results of some quasi-scientific survey found in a newspaper or magazine.
In ''Musical Instruments Americans Play,'' the two largest sections are taken up by piano and guitar, while smaller segments are occupied by organ, flute and clarinet. ''Observed Shapes,'' shown in the form of one of Mr. Colson's deftly playful studies on paper, breaks down the various shapes in which U.F.O.'s have been reported, including disc, boomerang and cigar.
With their simple icons and lettering, faded colors and exposed nails, Mr. Colson's paintings resemble signs from the 1940's or 50's, part folk art and part low-tech commercial art. What Mr. Colson is investigating is not science, after all, but a kind of modern folklore or popular mythology. The round shape with every part perfectly fitting might signify a yearning for wholeness in a confusingly fragmented world.
Some sculptures in which small simulated street signs are joined by metal brackets along with found objects to create Cubistically jumbled wall works are not as visually snappy as the ''Pie Charts,'' but they could lead to more expansive formal and conceptual discoveries.

Artforum: Greg Colson
At first sight Greg Colson’s sculptures look like yet another instance of the currently stylish approach that someone dubbed “stonewashed Minimalism.” His objects—made of lunch boxes, inner tubes, and scrap boards that are chipped, rusted, dented, and faded—bear conspicuous signs of aging and decrepitude. But upon closer inspection Colson’s work reveals delicate intrusions that seem to be at the core of his concerns. Various ordering systems are inscribed on the distressed surfaces of his found objects, in an apparent effort to control or deny the entropic forces of time.

Greg Colson manages to bring back in his works the immediate and direct physical relation that he and the spectator might have with the things and phenomenons that he is inspecting. There is an intellectual vibration that once occurred between the artist and the subject that is preserved in the final work. In fact, there is, of course, an aesthetic element but it is reserved in a very pure form, it is as pure as in an Yves Klein monochrome.No monkey business. In a media-intoxicated world, Greg Colson's works are like a fresh wind from the north; clean, cool, refreshing and sparkling. What a pleasure, an inspiration to start to love art (again).
