Studio Seine presents the solo exhibition 'The Comfort of Replicas' by Marisa Rappard from February 16th until April 5th. Rappard will show recent work on canvas and paper, machine-woven tapestries, and digital collages, narrating on the desire to meet without a screen in between, the search for comfort and genuine contact.
Human beings are social. They desire contact and are more connected than ever because of technology. Yet at the same time, there is a lack of physically sharing spaces to slowly and deliberately spend time together and to truly approach one another without a screen in between. Can an artificially generated friend, with an endless capacity to listen and a limitless understanding, offer the same solace as a human being?
During a residency in London, Rappard interviewed several experts about the societal consequences of technological developments. She was impacted by a story of a teenager who had an AI friend. Researchers explained how easily one attributes human characteristics to AI, and how people who adapt their faces to Instagram templates do this for a sense of belonging. Rappard looks into the societal impact of an increasingly digital life in her work.
In 'The Comfort of Replicas' Marisa Rappard displays recent work on canvas and paper, machine-woven tapestries, as well as digital collages. Through the interplay between digitally and manually made works, she tells a story of a desire to meet each other, a search for comfort and true contact, straight through digital borders.
During the Rotterdam Artweek Studio Seine will host an artist talk & paneldiscussion on Sunday March 30, between 11:00-13:00 H.
