At Art Rotterdam 2024, Root Gallery presents the works of Jan Kuhlemeier, Lisette Schumacher, Saïd Kinos and Quinda Verheul. The colourful works of Jan and Saïd, combined with the bright and abstract works of Lisette and the minimal, sculptural works by Quinda complement each other well. The different mediums and interacting nature of the works allow for an interesting visitor’s experience. Each artist has their own unique signature. Yet, they share in-depth research into material and its qualities, composition and concept of which in this case many are inspired by travelling to different parts of the world.
Lisette Schumacher will present a new series of works inspired by her second residency in Los Angeles. In particular, her stay at the Stahl House; the modernist residence designed by Buck Stahl and Pierre Koenig in the 1960’s. Her new series showcase the transformation of natural light from daytime to nighttime, and with it the appearance of mesmerising colour transitions in and around the house.
On view by Jan Kuhlemeier will be new paintings inspired by his latest trip to Indonesia. For this series, Jan returned to his memories of mesmerising sunsets in Indonesia that showed a variety of colours and transparencies in the waters. The works arised from his use of translucent layers of colour in which Jan searches for specific hues and colour nuances.
Saïd Kinos presents a new series of works on paper as well as a large painting. Fascinated by typography and various forms of visual communication, he equates the visual experience of language with the functional aspect and is a great advocate of 'post-typography' as an art movement. More specifically, he uses language as a vehicle to explore form, colour and different artistic methods.
Also presented at the fair will be the newest works by Quinda Verheul which are inspired by her journey to the Tian Shan mountains in Kyrgyzstan. Referring to different mountain passes, Quinda captures her experience of the landscape in reflective wall sculptures that form a testament to the wonders and complexities of nature.
