Art lovers can indulge themselves in September: On 2 and 3 September, GalleryViewer will host the opening of the gallery season in Amsterdam together with Amsterdam Art, and on 4 September, the cultural season will be opened in Rotterdam during Art Central Rotterdam.
Between 14.00 to 18.00, a number of Rotterdam-based locations will join forces: specifically Atelier Herenplaats, Christian Ouwens Galerie, Chrysalid Gallery, Cokkie Snoei, Contour Gallery, JOEY RAMONE, NL = US Art, PHOEBUS Rotterdam, ROOT Gallery and Studio Seine. These locations are within walking distance of each other. At 13.00 the event will be officially opened on the Rijnhoutplein, with a (Dutch) opening speech by Ove Lucas, director of CBK Rotterdam. The central goal will be emphasised: to put Rotterdam more firmly on the map as a city of art.
In Christian Ouwens Galerie for example, you can admire a series of works by Karel Appel that he made in the last years of his life, around the turn of the century. Appel used various materials on paper, including acrylic, watercolour stick, pencil, coloured chalk, sepia and ink.
Chrysalid Gallery will show work by the winners of the Raw Contest, a photo contest that is organised by the gallery. In the gallery space, you'll be able to see work from the winners of 2020: Francesca Menghini, Johannes Hogebrink, Pegah Vaez and Anna Golubeva.
In Cokkie Snoei you will find a group exhibition with work by Gijs Frieling, Maike Hemmers, Joost Krijnen, Ingrid Kruit, Studio Ossidiana, Panamarenko and Koen Taselaar. The works refer, directly or indirectly, to the two stained glass parrots that have stood guard in the gallery space for almost 150 years.
Contour Gallery will present the work of Elsemarijn Bruys, who was invited by the gallery for a residency in July and August. What happens when you completely hand over the reins as a gallery? Visitors will find themselves immersed in her work; expect grotesque sculptural works that stimulate the senses.
Looking for some extra guidance? Tip: Gritta Ewald and Anne-Marie Ros will organise free (Dutch) bike tours from the Rijnhoutplein between 14.15 and 16.15. Participate by sending an email to [email protected] and end the day with a drink in west.
