Perhaps I had confess’d the frightful truth, Phaedra, Act III, scene V (Noland),, 2018

The never-before shown works of Colorfield Phaedra (2014-2018) touch on a different aspect of the human mind, namely the edge of sanity due to unrequited love. Aëgerter asked Chris Nietvelt, one of the best actresses in the Dutch language area for classical tragedy, to perform acts from Jean Racine’s famous play Phèdre (1677) in front of three famous Color Field paintings from the Stedelijk Museum collection. The bright and rigid paintings – by Frank Stella, Ellsworth Kelly, and Kenneth Noland – stand in stark contrast to the dancer’s movements expressing a figure on the verge of madness, as Phèdre deals with the dangers posed by an impossible love. On Aëgerter’s photographs of this performance portions of these paintings conveying sharpness and control have been subtly softened and erased. Colorfield Phaedra comprised three mounted photographs measuring half the size of the large original paintings.
