Untitled (Retro #1), 2018

Wouter van der Laan (1993) strives for expression through a removed and calculated viewpoint. Removed and calculated in the process since he has eliminated the painterly touch in his work. For example, the transferred images are often created or edited digitally in Photoshop. His work is expressive through the act of editing, selecting, organising and combining diverse elements, with both digital and physical tools. More recently Van der Laan’s work has moved beyond the frame of the painting to the elements surrounding it. In this approach the focus shifts from the combination of different techniques and motives within the frame to what happens around it, such as the site- specific context. Collecting these motives in his “bank of materials” – e.g. residues and pictures of older work, prints, books, cloths - the artist aspires to let motives live, morph and connect throughout his oeuvre. In his process of creating, all artworks become provisional structures that generate new elements for future work. Wouter van der Laan studied at HKU, Utrecht and Frank Mohr Institute in Groningen. He was nominated for the Royal Painting Prize in 2017. In 2018, he will be a resident at the Skowhegan Summer Residency in Maine, USA.
