Created during a residency in Sao Paolo, this work is inspired by the Heysel disaster of 1985, in which 39 people – mostly Italians and Juventus fans – were killed and 600 were injured. Using medieval iconography, Dudek represents death above the stadium terraces, shown here as an architectural cross section.
Marcin Dudek's collages often allude to tragic or violent events from stadium history: “When I start working on a new collage, I often analyze the situation as if I was sitting in front of multiple monitors; I use archival materials, participants’ accounts, press clippings, architecture, statistics.”
