The sculptures of Johan Tahon reach, arch over and look to trespass thin lines to greater scopes. He finds volumes in silence, and anchors a floating quality to his sculpted figures. Mysterious bronze, plaster and ceramic sculptures take the shape of broken giants, ephemeral beings, tormented creatures, modest monks, sensual nudes and amorphous hybrids. All of these – whether they fit into the palm of a hand or reach up to a monumental height – float between tenses and senses.
Johan Tahon presented work internationally, with recent solo exhibitions at MOU in Belgium and at SZU Fine Arts Museum in Shenzhen China: and in group exhibitions at Musée Ariana Geneva, Lustwarande04 Tilburg, Ceramix Paris and Sèvres, Human Condition in Los Angeles, Istanbul Biennale, Gerhard Marcks Haus in Bremen, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington and Topkapi Paleis in Istanbul, amongst others. This work is part of public and private collections including those of S.M.A.K., M HKA, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, FMAC Paris, Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche Faenza, Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf and the residence of the Dutch Royal Family in The Hague.

5841 kilometers to the left of New York lies the small suburban town Oudenaarde where Johan Tahon installed his workshop in a former textile factory. His work is currently on display in the Envoy Gallery, West 22nd Street 534, New York City. They say it’s a small world.
VENUS HILL - RODERIK SIX
In 2003 werd de polyester sculptuur Venus Hill van Johan Tahon te Kemmel in brand gestoken. De rookpluim was tot in Poperinge te zien, 10 kilometer verderop. De daders werden nooit gevat.

ENKELE GEDACHTEN BIJ HET WERK VAN JOHAN TAHON - DOLPH KOHNSTAMM
Iedereen neemt waar vanuit zijn eigen achtergrond en ‘denkraam’ om met Marten Toonder te spreken. Vanuit den eigen kraam dus ook. Mijn kraam bestaat voornamelijk uit psychologie en literatuur. Van beeldhouwkunst weet ik maar heel weinig. Dat zal wel blijken.
EEN VERLANGEN NAAR MAGIE - JAN VAN HOVE
Johan Tahon (Menen, 1965) veroverde van bij zijn eerste optreden een eigen plaats in de Vlaamse kunstwereld. Het was in 1996, op de eerste tentoonstelling in het nieuwe gebouw van het Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst (SMAK) in Gent. Hij toonde er enkele grote beelden in gips, vervormde figuren die door hun sterke expressie en hun extreme kwetsbaarheid een beklijvende indruk maakten. Er was iets vreemds aan de hand met deze beelden.

Sterren vallen niet. Sterren sterven. Ze worden geboren, zijn jong, dan middelbaar, vervolgens oud en gaan ten slotte dood.

THE MAKING OF JOHAN TAHON - DIETER ROELSTRAETE
When Arnold Bode organised the very first edition of Documenta in the German town of Kassel in 1955 – a double attempt to convince the world that not all of Germany had fallen prey to the siren call of National-Socialist barbarity and to make that same Germany catch up, in one great leap, with the cultural life, and specifically the artistic movements, of that time – the Hessian professor of art history and his faithful adjutant, Werner Haftmann, chose an emblematic sculpture with a long and politically highly charged history as the historic ‘logo’ for what was conceived, from the start, as a historic pan-European exhibition.

Dit essay is niet geschreven door een kunsthistoricus. Het is eerder geschreven door een kunstliefhebber, iemand die kunst liefheeft, iemand die eveneens besmet is door de psychoanalyse en juist hierdoor wil leren van kunstwerken. Dit schrijven is veeleer een zo eerlijk mogelijk relaas van wat de sculpturen van Johan Tahon teweeg brengen, welke lectuur ze verschaffen. De ontmoetingen met zijn werk zijn voor mij begonnen in 1996 met de tentoonstelling ‘De rode Poort’ net voor de opening van het SMAK.

BIOGRAPHY
Johan Tahon was born in Menin (Belgium) in 1965. He lives and works in Sint-Denijs-Boekel (BE) and Solothurn (CH). He studied sculpture at the Ghent Royal Academy of Fine Arts (BE).
