Dieter Ravyts (1988, Dendermonde, BE) leeft & werkt in Gent. He studeerde af aan School of Arts (KASK), Gent in 2010. In 2014 werd Ravyts voor het eerst in de galerie getoond als deel van de groepstentoonstelling ‘The Originals S1 E1’, met onder anderen Heather Phillipson, Amalia Ulman, Jaako Pallasvuo en Ilja Karilampi. Hij nam deel aan ‘What’s the meaning of a Goldfish’ naast Audrey Cottin, Clive Hodgson, Derek Sullivan & Philippe Van Snick. Recente solo tentoonstelling zijn: ‘A major disappointement’ Tatjana Pieters, Gent (BE), ‘Tubepaintings, Paintcontainers and other stuff’, Loods12, Wetteren (BE) and ‘Too Lame for Fame’ (met Jelle Spruyt), These Things Take Time, Gent (BE). Zijn werken maken deel uit van privécollecties in België en Portugal.

THE PERTINENT ECLECTICISM OF DIETER RAVY
E.V: Can you talk to us about your approach in general? What characterizes your work? How do you actually work on a piece, from start to finish?
D.R: It depends on the work, but I generally start with an idea. For me, it’s important to have a concept at the core of an artwork, even if it’s a rather simple one. It’s the “raison d’être” of the work. Without it, art can appear pretty “soul-less”. I also make it a point to not start from an already existing image, for instance I would never take a photo and then turn it into a painting. Nor would I start painting and see where the act of painting itself takes me. Perhaps that will change someday – but for now, I always need an idea as my starting point. Then, it’s all just a matter of finding the appropriate form for it.
