Diederik Gerlach (1956) recently made a series of brush drawings in which he reinterprets well-known German landscapes as well as architectural nostalgia of former Eastern Germany. In Sonnenfinsternis, three schematically abstracted figures direct their gaze towards the sky, their eyes shielded. However, instead of the solar eclipse suggested in the title, the words ‘Drink Coca Cola Ice Cold’ emerge in the sky. A wink to the tempting consumerism of the West, obscuring the sky in East Germany.
