KIMBALL GUNNAR HOLTH
Are they horses or ponies? (green-orange), 2023=2024
Stutter painting
each 38.5 x 27 cm
Kimball Gunnar Holth is an artist who never finishes his work. While painting he searches for the new, the unknown in the unfinished state; the adventurous. Once that has been found, then it is finished, while simultaneously it is not finished.
It is the suspension of an answer to the question of whether the work is finished, because first he looks at what emerges.
Kimball sees the two oil paintings on paper as a single drawing, a drawing that presents itself to him with a stutter. He draws a horse head and another horse head to see if he can get a better image-of-the- horse-head.
In November - December 2023 Kimball Gunnar Holth had a solo exhibition 'A horse is not a pony'at CEAC / Chinese European Art Center in Xiamen , People's Republic of China. The press release reads:
"... He paints the silhouette of a horse (or a pony?) again and again, yet its face is an indistinguishable collection of random-looking masks. These works ask the question of what is and isn't important, which is similar to that of what is and isn't art. When an artist does something, there is also an option to do nothing - to wait and see what is already happening on the canvas, and to be open to a different outcome than the one you had in mind."
