Carl Johan Jacobsen is an artist and designer born in Copenhagen. He studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Acedemie. His work spans furniture, installation, digital image-making and physical form giving. World building is an immensely important factor in his work. Our computers are modern tools that make it easier for everyone to imagine and realise their fantasies, wether it's crafting an online persona or drawing in photoshop.
Using this notion, his work takes this digital fantasy and seeks to bring it into the real offering the viewer an alternative escapism to the one sold to us by silicon valley, encouraging agency by giving the viewer a sense of control over their fantasies.
His work is ultimately driven by the question of creating an image of the future, but with reference points deeply rooted in history. A desire persists to produce hyper contemporary atmospheres while yearning for gothic arches. These polar forces produce the tension which suspends the work, causing stylistic and semantic time-vertigo, not unlike the feeling of staring out the window and day dreaming.
