Henri Wagner’s abstract works transcend the material of which the work is made. This material is versatile, such as spray paint, coating, gesso, ink, mortar, glue, wood, glass and paper. All this has its origin in the world of graffiti. He is a painter who sculpts in the broad spectrum of materials. A literally layered composition characterizes the work without appearing thoughtful or compulsive. The image is often so obvious that it invites you to look further.
The continuous, unconventional way of image construction and destruction is typical of his working method. This leads to a fluid play of repulsion and attraction between the parts. Wagner intuitively composes his images into calm contrasts in soft and hard, movement and stillness, loose and firm. He boldly combines materials, yet manages to nuance in such a way that you experience the whole as serene.
