Andrea Freckmann ( 1970) thematises the phenomenon of nostalgia in her new series of paintings 'Damals so schön. In the media and public opinion she observes a new interest in the past as a reaction to the turmoil and disturbing developments of our time. She approaches this nostalgia critically because the past is often idealised and does not always correspond to how things really were fourty or more years ago.
In the painting, several elements are brought together such as the Volkswagen beetle, the man and woman in summer clothes mirrored in the plane in front of them. The tree, plants, church tower, mountain landscape and wolf also appeared in earlier works. Andrea Freckmann arranges these elements in her typical direct and free manner of painting.
