Format matters to Westerhuis. And it is not often modest. He himself says: "I believe in the power of big." Westerhuis is familiar with large scale. On the oil rig where he once worked, he was surrounded by a gigantic tangle of pipes, tubes and drills. It became an inspiration for his art.
The indestructibility, dense structure and visual coldness of stainless steel make it the perfect medium for Ronald A. Westerhuis's work. By polishing parts of the steel, he creates mirrored surfaces that make the landscape, passing clouds and the viewer himself part of the work.
Refusing to believe in restrictions or pre-imposed rules, the artist enjoys using his studios in Zwolle and Shanghai to produce huge pieces that become true landmarks in their final environment.
