Suspicious means not entirely reliable, ambiguous. It sounds exciting and is a common thread in the work of Johan Clarysse. The word does not even need to be mentioned because it is always a painting full of double meanings. This time it's layered portraits of Beuys, Courbet, Jung, Freud and more celebrities who delve into the human mind. Other canvases are full of dynamics and movement, referring to the world of dance and theatre. In these paintings too - because the context has been omitted or because of the interventions in the image - you cannot immediately indicate what exactly is going on or what drives the characters inwardly (quoted in part from Christine Vuegen's article in Collect).
