Elmar Trenkwalder's WVZ 362 S shows a naked figure on an elliptical column, holding two crowned rods. The column is made up of rings, and carries two elephant heads on both sides just below the rectangular platform on which the man stands. He seems to be a watchman or priest, dressed up for some ceremony or ritual act that we must guess for. His boots are decorated with a face, his a belt turns into an ornament on his back and carries shoulder pads, a necklace and a headdress that ends in two points. His face has a mouth with big lips, bulging eyes and overly large ears that make you wonder if it is a mask or a face we are looking at.
Trenkwalder never visited countries in Asia, but he applies elements from asian cultures in his work. He finds the use of exotic elements valuable because they break through the dominance of his own culture and make him freer and more uninhibited in his sculptures.
