Gijs Milius (Utrecht 1985) makes drawings and paintings, as well as installations and sculptures. He prefers to make work in situ with which he responds to the environment or the setting where the work is presented.
His exhibition 'Poppen' is currently on display at M HKA, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp.
In a conversation with Hans They, the curator of the exhibition, Milius says about his work: “It is normal that we don't really know what we are seeing at first. To me, something is only exciting or captivating if you feel the right amount of shame when you go to display it. You got excited about it, but it's not really clear what you're doing. Only later you can you what you have done to yourself or others. I wouldn't call it a 'risk', because it is only an exhibition of course. But there is shame.”
