The 'Light Paintings' by Henk Stallinga are part of a series of wall-based installations inspired on the Lumen Balance (2016) and Lumens (2016 - ongoing). By means of geometrically designed light-tubes, the artist offers resistance to the dominant frame of the painting, and shows what it means to literally paint with light. As such, Stallinga shows that light is not just a sensory and affective form of energy, but a solid and material entity as well. Unlike most paintings, these installations incorporate the concept of a double frame, using light tubes to contrast the hard black rectangular shape of the canvas, and producing both flat, geometric images, as well as the illusion of depth within a flat surface.
'Planes (Dyptich)' consists of two canvasses measuring 135 x 90 x 4 cm, with a space of approx. 10 cm in between.
