A Lambda print of an ice painting by Daan den Houter
A Lambda photo, with plexiglass, cut out as if it were an ice painting. It is an image of his first ice painting that he still keeps in his freezer. A held moment, too, with which he questions his concept, perhaps even undermining it.
Mischa Andriessen about his Ice Paintings: 'His ice paintings, which, as befits ice, melt at a certain moment and then cease to exist, undermine the prevailing notion that a painting is a timeless fixation of an image and/or an idea. From the freezing of the paint to the display and thus the thawing, these ice paintings do not have a permanent form for a moment. Are they still paintings if they keep changing until nothing is left? And if so, when are they? Or does such an ice painting actually comprise a lot of different paintings in a row?'
