Tavelling City belongs to a series of three dimensional works that Karin van Dam started years ago. The source of inspiration was Italo Calvino's novel The Invisible Cities, in which at the court of Kublai Kahn Marco Polo over and over tells the emperors stories about the cities he visited. Fascinated by this idea Karin van Dam started to build small three-dimensional towns, at first literally with walls and battlements from black cardboard, but gradually developping into more abstract constellations. Characteristic is the use of various materials, which she applies in a playfull, associative manner.
