The installations and sculptures by Paul Gees (born 1949 in Aalst, lives and works in Schoonaarde) have been a fixture in the Belgian art world since the 1980s. Central to Gees' work is the relationship between nature and culture, a duality that he explores in sophisticated assemblages in which balance and tension are determining factors.
The materials he uses for this (steel, wood and stone) are transformed from their structural and physical qualities.
Steel acquires a constructive and spatial meaning, wood forms a natural and dynamic component, stone represents both weight and the unpredictable content.
