John M Armleder in conversation with Helmut Federle (Zurich, 1985): "I can only confess being always close to mesmerized by the quasi-stupidity which qualifies the formal problems depicted in my pieces. But they do excite me enough to get through with them, and the whole process each time shakes the complete system of values I thought I had understood before".
John Armleder is constantly open to new perspectives that do not fit with what he has previously thought up or created in other work. The willingness to embrace a denial of what he thought he had discovered, through practice or by getting a new idea, is the great power of this artist. That makes his art and especially the mobility of his thinking so admirable and influential.
