In his ceramic sculptures Elmar Trenkwalder (1959) creates an intriguing fusion of architecture, nature and the human body. The exuberant formlanguage in his sculptures is related to the baroque architecture that flourished in Austria. In addition, parallels can be found in exotic cultures such as Asian stupas and the erotic statues in the facades of Hidu temples.
WVZ 311 is a kind of fountain, with a base of unfolded lotus leaves that forms a basin. It is enclosed by the four elephant heads above which are crowned by a seated Buddha figure. Around the core of the basin under the elephant heads you can discover faces.
Trenkwalder never visited countries in Asia, but he applies elements from Asian culture in his work. He finds the use of exotic elements valuable because they break through the dominance of his own culture and make him freer and more uninhibited in his sculptures.
