Susanna Inglada more than once has depicted the image of people falling as a symbol of collapse and breakdown. Though dramatic and frightful it holds a positive element as well in the sense that breakdown can open up the possibility of change and transformation.
In her current solo show ‘Is This Desire?’ at Galerie Maurits van de Laar the work ‘De un Hilo’ (From a Thread) is presented suspended from the ceiling, a cluster of four men hover above a surface of black waves.
The expressions on their faces are intense, their arms and legs frantically holding on to eachother to avoid falling down. Their immanent fall could also turn out to be a release once they let go and free themselves from each other and their anxiety and enter the water to experience a sudden freedom.
