Geert Baas (1955) brings together the painting, the painted drawing and the photo or found material as clearly and directly as possible. Not by mixing these techniques, but by a presentation as a diptych or triptych. To him that is the ideal form. To assemble such a mixed work, he waits for the exact right moment when everything coincides. Coincidence plays a major role in this.
An important element in his work is the line drawing that is applied directly to the canvas with the tube mouth; that can be a tag or a sign that evokes a strong calligraphic image. The photos and the scans that Baas uses in such a mixed work have a snapshot-like quality.
They are often out of focus, have an unusual framing and give the impression to have been photographed at random. In the resulting final picture, Baas literally places the medium of photography next to painting and drawing.
Baas has previously exhibited at various galleries in the Netherlands and abroad. He participated in the Biennial of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana, and the Seoul Drawing Biennale.
