In Translucent XVIII by Karen van de Vliet, fine lines of colour move through pale, translucent paint towards a dense black form. Yellow, blue, red and green remain visible within the darker surface, as though the colour continues underneath it.
Differences in gloss, transparency and relief give the abstract painting a strong physical presence. At close range, further lines, traces of colour and shifts in the surface become visible.
