An organic, almost rock-like form appears against the wall. Intense blue surrounds areas of pink, terracotta, ochre and grey. Brushstrokes and pencil lines are scattered across the surface, where smooth paint, rough textures and raised areas meet.
At the centre is a dark, elongated hollow, like an opening in the form. Around it, the surface builds up in layers, with the different materials remaining visible.
Spierenburg combines egg tempera, acrylic and oil paint, epoxy clay and pencil on sycamore. The wooden support is an integral part of the work. Epoxy clay gives the surface volume and structure, while paint and pencil add colour and lines.
The work sits between painting and object. The form may suggest a fragment of landscape, a piece of rock or something bodily, without settling into any one of these associations. Its irregular outline and built-up skin suggest something that has grown, changed and gradually taken shape.
