In this forest, trees don't die
During the Permian, the geological era covering the period from about 300 to 250 million years ago, the Calamites Suckowi dies out. This tree-like plant belongs to the Calamites genus and can grow about 20 to 30 meters tall. It is the fossils that now tell us that the trunk of the plant had a bamboo-like appearance, with vertical ribs.She has no siblings. And moving around a lot in her childhood years didn't really give her time to make friends. Anouk Griffioen liked to be alone and that never really passed. In her studio in the center of Rotterdam, which is surrounded by speeding cars and passers-by, she created a forest to seek the silence. The walls of the space are papered with gigantic drawing sheets that were once hail white. Now, millions of charcoal lines later, a colorless forest is emerging. Upon entering - don't take off the shoes, or your socks will soon be full of charcoal dust - it seems as if my brain has suddenly forgotten how the perception of the color green works again. Trunks and straws grow up through the walls. The forest barely reaches the ceiling - the kitchen stairs for hanging the sheets have only five steps. The drawn branches are deep black; the leaves dark gray because they are slightly less harsh there; the side-grains of those same leaves so light gray that they become visible only when my nose almost touches the paper. Because Anouk Griffioen saves out pieces of paper to give the
flower buds take shape, she draws even with white.
In this forest, trees don't die. Erasing is out of the question, which means that every line will last forever. The leaves that fall from the tree will never touch the ground, grass is not trampled here. Under a sealing fixative, Anouk Griffioen preserves the nature - from the gardens designed by Piet Oudolf in New York to the field of the dog walking zone - into eternity.
Beech, also known as Fagus Sylvatica, is a plant in the so-called nap bearer family.
Due to deforestation and increasing drought in the 21st century, the beech was last observed in the year 2189. The characteristic undulation in the beech leaf and the typical smooth, thin bark will forever be preserved in Anouk Griffioen's drawings.
