Concepts such as transformation, assimilation and appropriation play an important role in the work of multimedia artist Ana Navas (1984, Quito, ECU). Navas’ presentations often consist of installations in which paintings, objects, assemblages and video function as ‘areas’ in which those processes of transformation and assimilation take place. Mimicry is a key theme in Navas’ work, alongside notions of stereotype (or stereotypical identities) and the role of the accompanying costumes in social interactions.
A specific topic that Navas focuses on in her work is the combination of fashion, power and the identity of women. Navas: "I started to develop a new body of work on fashion's accompaniment in women's aim to break the glass ceiling." What began as a sculptural interpretation of clothing advice to women in different situations and different times, developed into a research into femininity, power structures and notions of identity determined by their cultural context.
For Navas, art is a dialogue with the other, a dialogue that is not limited to the professional public, but that generates an echo in a wider field. One of the most important questions in her work is how art is perceived and transformed outside the context of art itself and what are the points where different disciplines such as ethnology, art and design meet. She is also fascinated by the relationship between high and popular culture.
Navas often works on different series of works at the same time. The conceptual connection between the works is created in the process of installing. With the idea of transformation in mind, Navas considers an exhibition as an "essayistic" moment rather than as a definitive form. The works are understood as modules that can be reused for new "pieces". In this way they are charged with a new meaning in every new constellation.

Ana Navas was born in 1984 in Quito, Ecuador, but grew up in Venezuela. She studied from 2004 to 2010 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, where from 2010 to 2011 she was "Meisterschülerin" (MA) with Franz Ackermann. Between 2012 and 2014 she was a resident at De Ateliers in Amsterdam. This was followed by residencies in France, Mexico, Brazil and Colombia. Her work has been shown in solo presentations in, among others, Charco, León, (MX, 2019-2020), SCHUNCK, Heerlen (2019, NL), the Kunstruimte of De Nederlandsche Bank (2019, NL), the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden Baden (2018, DE), in Galerie Stadt Sindelfingen (2017, DE), P ///// AKT Amsterdam (2017), CEAAC Strasbourg (2017, FR), Abra Caracas (2017, VE), Nixon, Mexico City (2017 , MX). The work of Ana Navas is included in private collections at home and abroad.
