Scott Anderson (born Urbana, IL, US. 1973) received a BFA from Kansas State University in 1997, an MFA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2003, and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in 2015.
Anderson’s works reflect an intuitive process by which he migrates from abstraction to figuration. In this form of creation, shapes are anthropomorphic: limbs, phalli, even suggested facial expressions. Anderson plays a game of recognition and comfortable tensions; his humanized objects and familiar scenarios speak to an emotional architecture.
Anderson has exhibited nationally and internationally at numerous institutions and galleries, including, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, Cranbrook Museum of Art, Neuberger Museum of Art, Parrish Museum of Art, Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Kavi Gupta Gallery, Chicago, Galerie Richard, Paris, Beers Gallery, London, Mark Moore Gallery, Los Angeles, Stux Gallery, New York, and Carl E. Smith Gallery, Los Angeles.
He has received multiple awards and fellowships including a Pollock-Krasner award, and the William and Dorothy Yeck Award. Anderson’s work has been reviewed in several reputable publications including the New York Times, Art News, Art Pulse Magazine, Beautiful/Decay, The Chicago Tribune, and the Los Angeles Times, among others. Scott Anderson currently lives and works in La Cienega, New Mexico and is an associate professor in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of New Mexico.
