Maaike Schoorel's work makes an appeal to the viewer's ability to see. If you more look closely, you’ll notice that the seemingly monochrome surfaces are made up of painted layers: creamy or thin, white or intensely black. If you look even longer, you’ll discover forms, figures or even representation.
At first glance, Maaike Schoorel's canvases seem almost empty. You can see some subtle brushstrokes, soft shades of colour, a glimmer here and there. In search of clues, your eyes start to move over the canvas. Only after a longer period of time does a picture emerge: a still life with a bottle of still water, a picnic party dressed in leisure clothing, a beach scene or landscape.
Maaike Schoorel's subjects can often be traced back to classical painting genres, but also have a distinctly contemporary character. She uses self-made snapshots, photos from her own family albums or memories and dreams as a starting point. As Schoorel applies paint only sparsely, the images create an interval between seeing and understanding, in which the imagination of the viewer is stimulated.
Maaike Schoorel's paintings occupy a unique place in a visual culture that is dictated by an abundance of rapidly successive stimuli. Seemingly empty, the canvases force the viewer to slow down and require a conscious perception. Just as silence can be deafening, so Schoorel’s works demand supreme concentration of the eye.
