The work of Bernard Sercu is largely related to his questioning of the material of the medium he employs, which consists of wood, paper or canvas, and to its rhythm of notches and marks. In this way, he perfectly expresses the profound origin of the iconoclastic destruction and uses it to create another image. In his visual world, destruction evokes an act of reconstruction.
The disfiguration of the medium’s outer surface is a permanent feature of his oeuvre and the essential path to releasing its renewal. The symbolism - circle, square, line - is not only a basic intrusion but is also an expression. It is embedded in a mostly geometrically abstract structure in which repetition plays a remarkable role and a distinct repeating incision implies rhythm responding to a fundamental idea.
