Westerkadekunst exhibits surprising work by artists who are at the beginning of their careers, but we also enjoy showcasing developments from more established names. The condition is always that there is a unique and original signature present. For us, art should speak to the heart and be visually interesting in the first place, without the need for extensive explanation beforehand. We find work that raises questions more attractive than work that provides answers. We actively strive to broaden our reach by attracting new audiences. We are convinced that there are many people who are touched by fine arts without realizing it.
The gallery was founded in 2017 by Davy Pieters (as Maaskoe Gallery) and is located in a classical building on the Maas river in Rotterdam's Scheepvaartkwartier, a renowned neighborhood near the city center and important museums. On average, we organize 10 exhibitions per year, plus a Summer Salon where we provide a platform for young figurative painters. We mainly exhibit painting and sculpture and there is space for photography, prints, ceramics, and installations. The artists often come from Rotterdam but also from other parts of the country and surroundings.
We are open to collaboration and exchange with other galleries or art centers, including international ones, in order to bring more dynamism and diversity to the art scene. Although our focus is on visual art, we hope to also pay attention to interdisciplinary forms with other disciplines such as music, poetry, theater, and science in the future.
