The photographs by Inez Smit are stills from a non-existent memory. They evoke a melancholic feeling, a longing for a beautiful moment that may still come but one that you want to hold onto and not forget.
The transient subjects like flowers, shadows, and light reveal the influence of time on our thoughts, often focused on the future, while looking back allows us to appreciate the value of small moments. When your gaze falls upon a still life, it can later represent a moment in your memory. These still lifes thus demonstrate the guiding power of small things, but they also show that every story has different perspectives when viewed in a different light.
Inez Smit graduated from the Utrecht School of the Arts in 1991, specializing in autonomous visual arts. In 2023, she obtained her diploma in Photography from the Dutch Photo School in Rotterdam.
