Stief DeSmet's work is typified by recognisable symbols, whether or not iconographically laden. He is known for his sculptures, paintings videos and installations in which he often explores the friction between nature and culture. DeSmet leads us into the realm of both ancient and contemporary myths, icons and archetypes; the world of the fable, the sublime, the dream or the hallucination. He creates images that let us (for a while) dwell in an idyllic setting, disturbed or not, and he rearranges the templates and clichés of art history and our imagination.
Work by Stief DeSmet can be found in private and public collections
