Annemarie van Haeringen knows better than anyone how to bring a story to life with a pencil. This Dutch illustrator is renowned for creating picture books that instantly draw readers into their world. You may know her from classics such as *Princess with the Long Hair* (*Prinses met de lange haren*) or *Bear Visits Butterfly* (*Beer is op Vlinder*). She has also collaborated with celebrated authors including Bibi Dumon Tak, Toon Tellegen, and Rindert Kromhout—writers with a remarkable gift for storytelling, to which Van Haeringen adds her own distinctive magic.
She began her creative journey at the teacher training college for drawing and art education in Tilburg and later continued her studies at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, where she specialized in illustration. Her choice proved successful: after graduating in 1983, she immediately entered the world of children's books. Her first publication was *Kattensprongen en Reuzestappen* (*Cat Leaps and Giant Steps*), a book about winter supplies, giants, and cats.
In addition to illustrating books, Annemarie also worked for the Dutch public broadcaster VPRO, creating short animated films based on Toon Tellegen’s animal stories. She contributed illustrations to children’s magazines and to newspapers such as *NRC Handelsblad* and *Trouw*. Her work can be found in many places, and it is always instantly recognizable.
Over the years, she has received numerous prestigious awards. She won the Golden Brush (*Gouden Penseel*), the Netherlands’ most important illustration prize, no fewer than three times. In 2025, she received what many consider the crowning achievement of her career: the Max Velthuijs Prize, awarded for her entire body of work. Van Haeringen herself described it as “a kind of superlative above all the other wonderful prizes I have been fortunate enough to receive.” And rightly so.
