Steven Antonio Manes (1993, Limburg BE) is an expressive contemporary artist who always follows his intuition in his practice. He obtained his master's degree in sculpture at Sint-Lucas in Ghent (2017). Besides abstract sculptures in clay, plaster, metal and found materials, he makes expressive drawings with wall paint, oil pastels and graphite on mainly paper.
As a source of inspiration, he uses his own environment, the urge to create, the questioning of his individual and the transience of life. Underlying this is his religious background in confrontation with his orientation which, growing up, caused a constant inner conflict. On the one hand, the feeling of wanting to be part of a community and, on the other, developing one's own personality. Steven Antonio Manes puts his individuality in his work in a characterful way and pulls it open universally. The freedom offered by art allows the artist to show who he really is without fear.
For him, his works are a legacy that remind him of different phases of his life. Consequently, art not only acts as an expressive outlet but is also autobiographical and a proof of existence for him. His past as well as his Italian origins play a not insignificant role in his work. For him, the use of words and phrases in his mother tongue is the most spontaneous and pure, what emerges from the heart. Steven Antonio's connection with the southern Italian landscape is also reflected in his work as an earthly element; abstract rock formations, stones, hot temperatures, the wild sea,...

His Italian roots have a profound influence on his work. In the South of Italy, he was very inspired and attracted by every aspect of this landscape, but mainly the roughness and abstract shapes.
The earthliness of the landscape makes the work very grounded and gives it character.
