Jan van Munster (1939–2024) was a Dutch visual artist best known for his sculptures, installations and light works. Energy was a central theme throughout his oeuvre, both as a physical phenomenon and as a metaphor for tension, force and human presence. He worked with materials and media such as neon, electricity, heat, magnetism, ice and steel. Words, signs and simple geometric forms often acquired a monumental and almost physical presence in his work. Van Munster continually explored the relationship between matter and immaterial forces, between what can be seen and what can only be felt or measured. His work occupies the intersection of sculpture, conceptual art and architectural intervention. From the 1960s onwards, he developed an international body of work that was exhibited in museums, art institutions and public spaces. With his restrained visual language and consistent investigation of energy, Jan van Munster holds a distinctive position within post-war Dutch art.
