Jarik Jongman (1962) worked as Anselm Kiefer's assistant in France after studying at the Arnhem Academy of Art. He exhibited regularly abroad, including in Berlin, London, New York, Jerusalem and twice in collateral events at the Venice Biennale, in 2009 and 2011. In 2010, he won the (shared) first prize of the UK National Open Art Competition with jury president Gavin Turk. His work has been selected for the Threadneedle prize and the John Moores prize and exhibited at the Liverpool Biennale in 2012. In 2017, he won the prestigious Luxembourg Art Prize. Jongman depicts abandoned buildings where nature has taken over. These works are both disturbing and reassuring because of the underlying idea that after humankind, the earth and nature will survive.
