Riette Wanders (1966) is a Dutch artist who works in drawings and textiles.
Her work is abstract and vital. The handling of the material is essential for Wanders. This is visible in the deep black of Siberian chalk (in her drawings) and in the layered transparency in her textile works. Wander’s work is tactile and intuitive, but also breathes the awareness of an uninterrupted (art) history that goes back to the earliest human creative expressions. This is reflected in the choice of media: both drawing and working in textiles are among the oldest artistic techniques.
Wanders works within a number of self-imposed limits. She never uses color or perspective; for a number of years, she no longer works figuratively. Wanders' work proves that great freedom exists precisely within these boundaries. Wanders is self-taught and lives and works in Amsterdam.
She has exhibited at, amongst others: PS Projectspace, Amsterdam; Torrance Art Museum, Los Angeles; Coda Apeldoorn; Galerie Sabine Knust Munich; Galerie Gisela Clement, Bonn; Billytown, The Hague; Drawing Centre Diepenheim (NL); Boeske & Hofland, Leipzig.
