British-born photographer Janette Beckman is best known for her work highlighting the London punkscene and the subcultures of the 1970s and ‘80s. She began her career at the dawn of punk rock working for publications such as The Face and Melody Maker. Documenting the youth culture of this era, she portrayed some of the biggest artists of this time, such as The Clash, the Sex Pistols, and Boy George, as well as three Police album covers.
After moving to NYC in 1983, Beckman was drawn to the emerging underground hip-hop scene where she photographed the pioneers of this subculture, like RUN DMC, Slick Rick, Salt-N-Pepa, Grandmaster Flash, LL Cool J, and Big Daddy Kane.
Beyond music as the subject matter, her photography is dedicated to documenting the outliers of society, who challenge social and political norms. Most notably, she portrayed groups such as Manhattan based dirt bike gang The Go Hard Boyz; an illegal girl fight club in Brownsville, New York; the Mexican-American street gang El Hoyo Maravilla in Los Angeles; and the hard-nosed rodeo riders of the River City Rodeo in Omaha, Nebraska. Additionally, she has documented recent movements, including Black Lives Matter, Anti-Trump protests, and peace demonstrations for Gaza
Beckman has published six books, including 'Rap, Portraits & Lyrics of a Generation of Black Rockers', 'Made In The UK: The Music of Attitude 1977-1983', 'The Breaks, Stylin’ and Profilin’ 1982- 1990', 'El Hoyo Maravilla', and 'The Mash Up, Hip Hop Photos Remixed by Iconic Graffiti Artists'. In 2021, the monograph 'Rebels: From Punk to Dior' was published, covering four decades of her work.

Gaining international recognition, Beckman’s work has been exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums worldwide, such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; The Annenberg Space for Photography, Los Angeles; and Kunsthal Rotterdam, The Netherlands, amongst others. Her work has also been included in the permanent collections of the British National Portrait Gallery, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Museum of the City of New York, the Musée des Civilisations de l’Europe, and the Nakamura Keith Haring Collection.
