In this exhibition, Wannes Lecompte unfolds painting as a sustained and attentive practice. The seven large-scale canvases resonate with colour, direction, and movement, inviting a one-to-one encounter with the surface. Painted without frames and only later stretched, they retain a direct and physical relation to the act of painting itself.
At the centre of the space, a large “book” composed of 26 unstretched canvases offers a different rhythm. Visitors are invited to turn its pages, where recto and verso create shifting compositions — a quiet, tactile experience that activates the viewer as participant.
As curator Mieke Mels writes:
“Wannes Lecompte asks the viewer to become a ‘viewer' — one who takes time. His paintings do not seek to charm immediately, but continue to reveal themselves through attention.”
