The artist duo Les Deux Garçons is celebrating twenty-five years of artistic practice this year. They are marking this milestone with, among other things, a solo show at Coppejans Gallery, where a selection from their exceptionally versatile oeuvre will be presented.
The work of Atelier Les Deux Garçons revolves around playfulness, ambiguity and a subtle undermining of the obvious within art and design. They combine sculpture, installation and object art with a distinct sense of irony and ambiguity, in which aesthetics and concept are always in tension. Their work often starts from recognisable forms or materials, which they transform into poetic and sometimes absurd visual language.
Het gebruik van taxidermie in hun werk is één van de onderscheidende elementen in hun kunstenaarspraktijk. Daarmee geven ze een nieuwe invulling aan de eeuwenoude traditie van het conserveren en ensceneren van dieren, niet als louter wetenschappelijk of decoratief object, maar als drager van betekenis, emotie en verhaal. Door overleden dieren een bijna theatrale rol toe te kennen, balanceren ze tussen schoonheid en ongemak, tussen fascinatie en vervreemding. Hun benadering raakt aan thema’s als vergankelijkheid, identiteit en de fragiele relatie tussen mens en natuur.
